PVC stands for “polyvinyl chloride,” which is a tough synthetic resin known for its durability and versatility. In fact, within the roofing industry, PVC is considered to be the most durable of all flat roofing materials. As the name suggests, “single-ply,” refers to the fact that the PVC membranes consist of a single layer of membrane as both waterproof and weather surface. Single-ply membranes have become increasingly popular over the years because of their relative ease of installation, flexibility and competitive cost. Because of its chemical make-up, PVC single-ply has the added advantage of being able to withstand thermal movement. That means that PVC will not crack, buckle or deteriorate under the stress of extreme temperature variations. It can withstand excessive heat and extreme cold equally as well, and because of its flexibility, can expand and contract without damage when the temperatures suddenly change. Plus, by its nature, PVC can endure even the most punishing weather conditions, including heavy rain, ice and snow. As an added benefit, PVC membranes are also one of the only two types of flat roofing membranes that have hot welded seams (TPO being the other type).
